Sox 6, Toronto 4 (5 innings)
It always seems like the Sox lose these rain-shortened games. This time, they got a little love from the umpires, as they forced the game through the top of the 5th inning to make it official. It got scary - Garcia lost control of the strike zone and Iguchi bobbled what should have been the third out - but it did get finished. This was the Blue Jays' only trip to Chicago, so it was imperative that they finish the game one way or another. It should also be noted that had the Blue Jays tied the game or had gone ahead in the 5th inning, the game would have been "suspended" pursuant to Rule 4.12. So the Sox weren't really too threatened by Garcia's shaky fifth inning.
Hey, Freddy Garcia gets the first complete game of the year for the Sox! Not what I would have guessed. His velocity is still down, and he doesn't have the Greg-Maddux-like command to get by with an 87-mph fastball. I'd like to see them skip Freddy, or otherwise take a look at him to see what might be wrong. With McCarthy available, there is no reason why we should have a starter go at less than 95%.
Also in big news, Scott Podsednik had his first positive ERV game of the year, clocking in at a whopping 1.17 ERV. I was curious to see that a leadoff triple has a value of 1.00 ERV, the same as a solo home run. We all know that a home run is better than a triple, but it's interesting nonetheless.
A note on the scoring - Jim Thome got a whopping -0.61 ERV on baserunning. Not really his fault, but the official scorer charged Benji Molina with an error when he scored on Konerko's double in the fourth inning. The scorer (whom I follow, to avoid subjectivity) said that Thome would have been out at the plate. So I give Konerko credit for a double putting Thome to third with two outs, Thome with -0.61 ERV for turning that situation into a three-out (zero ERV) situation, and then Molina with 1.35 ERV for letting the run score (1) and leaving the Sox with a man-on-second, two-out situation (0.35 ERV). Simple, ain't it?
Fielding: -1.00 (Iguchi error)
Team ERV: 1.66 (Towers balk (0.29), Molina error (1.35) Downs wild pitch (0.02))
Player of the Game: Jermaine Dye
Pitcher of the Game: None awarded (no positive ERV pitchers).
